Chris Trueman’s latest acrylic paintings treat absence as a gestural arcadia to sink into. Evoking Op Art, abstract expressionism, and graffiti culture, his extremely layered process centers the physical act of mark-making and its residual effects. Through painting on Yupo— a synthetic, non-absorbent paper— Trueman conflates positive and negative space into a nebulous rabbit hole of action, where erased brushstrokes give way to more underlying layers. This near constant state of addition and subtraction results in an uncannily kaleidoscopic haze. The finished works imitate the limitlessness of digital worlds, scraping away nearsighted preconceptions of what a physical surface can accomplish.

“I make paintings based on the premise that the sum of two contradicting experiences does not cancel out but creates a whole separate experience unto itself.” — Chris Trueman

Chris Trueman graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003, earning dual BFA degrees in Painting and Digital Media. He relocated to southern California to attend Claremont Graduate University, earning a MFA in 2010. Trueman currently teaches at Chaffey College and has previously taught at Chapman University, Fullerton College and Santa Ana College. He has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, Portland and internationally in Milan, Paris, Berlin, Beijing and Brisbane (AUS).
