The abstract photography of Aaron Leitz‘s Homage series explores color relationships through reinventions of Josef Albers’ famous ‘Homage to the Square’ paintings. Using colored cellophane to mimic the materiality of paint, Leitz layers bold, translucent shades of stark colors atop each other, complicating notions of objective representation. Oftentimes appearing slightly coarse in texture, Leitz achieves a vast range of elemental and unorthodox color combinations.
“I find these unique constraints liberating and ripe for experimentation and by combining abstraction and realism in ways that only a camera can, I hope to create photographs that invite the viewer to reinterpret the familiar in ways that spark curiosity, reflection, and joy.
