Long interested in abstraction, Donald Sultan’s flower paintings utilize visual play between positive and negative space, bold coloration and contrast, and ambiguity of scale. Furthermore, his works on paper investigate the forms of flowers in conte crayon and flock on paper, resulting in largely monochromatic and prominent images. Sultan’s flowers float and cluster together, pushing the edges of the paper and creating works that demand your attention by virtue of their sexy boldness and surreal quality. He is included in numerous museum and private collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bank America Corporation, Detroit Institute of Art, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Museum of Modern Art New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Singapore Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
