Palm Springs-based painter Sara Genn creates free-hand color field paintings that highlight process, materiality, and singularity of color. Her soft-edged graphics formulate a visual language— a New Alphabet— that seeks to distill the essence of something down to its untranslatable core. Without the use of projection, tape, or any assistance, Genn’s tranquil paintings take on a profound gravity that questions the significance of individual mark-making. There are no visible brushstrokes, but a closer look reveals subtle imperfections atop the taut canvas, exposing a dynamic tension between the imperfect hand of the painter and the indifferent grace of the painting. Genn’s ever-expanding language of shape and color welcomes the viewer into a self-contained world, where geometric fields discreetly guide without force, and mesmerize without pretension.

Genn often reference landscapes, personal objects, and textile techniques in her work, shifting our perception of painting and its traditional procedure. Her style is inherently bound to en plein air painting, as the hyper-specific colors of her compositions arise out of a thoughtful rendering of local color. The intense use of a single color recontextualizes the complex images and landscapes around us— a snowcapped hill turns into an immersive beige plane, golden hour light leaping onto sandstone becomes a distinctive amber.

Genn’s paintings have been featured in The Toronto Arts Council, Canadian House and Home, NYLON Japan, Town and Country, W, Domino, American Art Collector, New York Magazine, LONY, and Tatler, as well as in the Rizzoli publication New York Parties; Private Views and for the Faberge Big Egg Hunt. Sara Genn is also a composer and independent recording artist, certified Gold in France and publishes a twice-weekly letter on art that carries over fifty thousand direct subscribers.
